What is a Pediatric Dentist? Dentists are ready to practice general, family dentistry after completing four years of a doctoral program and passing board exams. To become a specialist in pediatric dentistry, another two years of intensive specialty training is completed. These two years are spent studying and practicing hospital dentistry, interceptive orthodontics, child development and behavior, children's restorative dentistry, pharmacology and sedation, oral development and facial growth, and treatment of medically compromised and disabled children. Original research is also done. Pediatric Dentists are the best choice for your child! Jacqueline Bourdette, D.M.D., P.C.
Dr. Bourdette has been practicing dentistry since 1986, receiving her doctor of dental medicine degree from Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU). She was a general dentist in public health clinics for six years, during which time she realized that her true calling was in providing dentistry for children. The vast majority of patients that she saw were children. She could have continued to have a practice that was mostly children, but felt that it was in the best interest of the kids to receive specialized training. This way she could provide the best of dental care to the ones she loves the best. She returned to OHSU for a two year residency in pediatric dentistry and received her specialty certificate in 1994. Since then, she has been providing tender, loving dental care to Oregon children. Dr. Bourdette received her Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Sciences (a double major in psychology and sociology) in 1975 from San Jose State University. After this, she went to nursing school and was a Registered Nurse until becoming a dentist. Both of these fields of study prepared her well for being a children's dentist. The nursing background laid a solid foundation for understanding children's health needs, physical assessment, preparation for hospital dentistry and the use of medications. Parents can appreciate the need for a degree in psychology when they're around kids! For Dr. Bourdette, it was extremely helpful in the extensive training in child psychology, child development and behavior management. Dr. Bourdette is a member of the American Dental Association, the Oregon Dental Association, Multnomah Dental Society, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Oregon Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Each of these memberships represent a commitment to the highest standard of dental care. Dr. Bourdette is on the surgical staff of Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Kaiser Hospital.
